Waste Broker's Licences
A Waste Broker's licence is required when the BBC arranges and provides waste management services to its tenants.

A full list of the requirements is available in the Final Guidance on Waste Duty of Care for BBC tenants.

The guidance applies to companies that rent space in BBC Properties. It does not apply to companies that are employed directly by the BBC or its service partners to provide a service.

Key Requirements:
  • The BBC must apply for and maintain a Waste Broker's licence.
  • At the start of a tenancy, or when there is a significant change to the waste streams that the tenant produces, the tenant must provide details of the waste that they intend to discard on a Waste Transfer Note, using the standard Environment Agency Format (see Waste Transfer Notes) to BBC Workplace or its service provider. The Waste Transfer Note must be signed by both the tenant and BBC Workplace.
  • BBC Tenants must segregate their waste (at a minimum) into Hazardous, Non-hazardous and Category 3 animal by products (if applicable see Note below for more details).

Note: Category 3 animal by-products consist of raw or cured meat that is no longer fit for human consumption. Category 3 material cannot be disposed in landfill because of the risk of disease (e.g. BSE) transmission. These regulations apply to animal by-products from non-catering outlets (e.g. grocery stores).
