Fluorinated Greenhouse Gasses
Fluorinated Greenhouse Gasses (F-gasses) are
widely used to replace Ozone Depleting Substances in refrigeration,
air conditioning and fire suppression systems, because they have no
impact on the ozone layer. However, F-gasses have large global
warming potentials, so stringent new measures are being introduced
to reduce their release into the atmosphere.
A full list of commonly used F-gases and HFC
blends can be found in the document 'A Summary of BBC Obligations F-gasses'.
From 7th July 2007, the regulations require the
'operator' (BBC or its nominated contractor) of equipment
containing F-gasses to:
- Maintain a register of the types and quantities of gasses used in its equipment.
- Test for leaks according to a predetermined schedule.
- Use suitable qualified contractors for all systems maintenance and repair.
- Install leak detection systems on equipment containing more than 300kg of gas. (Separate timeframes apply to fire suppression systems see detailed guidance for more information)
More detailed guidance is available in the
guidance document
'A Summary of BBC Obligations F-gasses'.
