Isolation and switching

Where necessary to prevent danger, all systems and installations must be provided with suitable means for:
  • cutting off of the supply of electrical energy to electrical equipment, and
  • isolation of the electrical equipment.

Power supplies to test benches and workshop equipment must be controlled via a master switch which is both clearly identifiable and easily accessible at all times. Power to lighting for the area must not be controlled from this same switch.

Where un-interruptible power supply (UPS) systems feed workshop supplies:
  • these must have an accessible and identifiable means of isolation for all of the sockets served which must be separate from that for any other distribution systems present
  • which are 'stand alone' supplies, these must have an accessible and identifiable output switch.
Where there is more than one distributed feed from a UPS, each feed should be provided with an accessible and clearly identifiable isolator and the distribution sockets should be labelled as to which feed they are attached.
