Rope Access

These guidelines apply to those who intend to use rope access techniques as a means of:

  • Work restraint e.g. filming from a helicopter with door removed, filming close to a cliff edge
  • Work positioning e.g. organising an abseil event from TVC roof, close up filming of birds nesting down a cliff face
  • Fall arrest e.g. rigging scaffolding at height, walking a tightrope.

The safety procedures and principles given here apply to those who are at work and should not be confused with other uses of ropes, for example, associated with adventure sports such as climbing or caving whose techniques have been established to suit these particular activities and environments. Hence, the adventure activity guidelines will apply to a contributor being filmed on a climbing wall, but these guidelines will apply to the cameraman suspended half way up the wall capturing the action.
