Can I use anyone to provide physical
effects?
There is a vetted list of physical effects providers but this is not mandatory, however the contractors on the list have been through a vetting process and you must ensure whoever you contract in to provide your effects are competent, comply with legal requirements relating to their work and equipment and also have sufficient insurance. A suitable and sufficient risk assessment must also be provided for the activity.

Can my prop men carry out simple effects
themselves?
There is often a fine line between what is an effect requiring a specialist and a simple effect which may be attempted by the production. In both cases the person must be competent in the activity, follow best practice and comply with legal requirements. A risk assessment must be provided in advance of the activity.

Should productions insure the activity,
or should the contractor have their own Public Liability
insurance?
All contractors are normally expected to provide their own insurance covering their own activities and staff. If there are doubts as to the level of insurance in place, for example for international filming or if productions contract staff directly, then BBC Insurance Services should be contacted for advice.
