Health at Work - Guidance for Managers
Core Functions and Priorities

The function of occupational health is to provide BBC Management with an integrated health management process, including:
  • pre employment health and safety screening;
  • pre-placement health assessment of fitness for task where appropriate;
  • health surveillance for groups at risk, identified by risk assessments;
  • travel briefing and advice with travel prophylaxis and preparation;
  • contact with, and advice for, those on extended sickness absence;
  • liaison when necessary with GPs and medical specialists caring for our staff;
  • assessment of fitness for work in those returning from absence;
  • advice on rehabilitation to work, including timed, graduated programmes;
  • assessment of long term fitness for work following ill health or injury;
  • assessment of eligibility for ill health retirement;
  • health education on work-related issues;
  • information provided to senior managers about health risks and trends.
