Advice for deploying managers

The risk of the virus spreading from bird to human is low. However there are certain precautions you must take when assigning staff to cover a story on avian influenza outbreaks. These precautions are to protect your staff, but also to prevent the infection from spreading.

Ensure all staff:
  • Check the BBC Safety web site for up-to-date health advice.
  • Contact the High Risk Team.
  • Are referred to an occupational health doctor for consideration of medical interventions (e.g. the need for anti-virals if travelling to a remote area with limited access to medical care). Contact BBC HR Direct.
  • Complete assignment risk assessment.
  • Have the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). This is obtainable from safety equipment stores.
Try and limit the number of staff deployed, and where possible try to assign staff who are familiar with bio-security measures.
