Risks

Risks vary depending on whether the sharp is one that you have used and know to be uncontaminated by blood, or whether you have discovered the sharp and it could be contaminated by blood. Risks include:
  • Injury, i.e. lacerations, bleeding;
  • there may be a risk of simple bacterial infection if the sharp is not clean;
  • there may also be a risk of tetanus;
  • blood contamination. Blood borne diseases (e.g. Hepatitis and HIV). Blood borne infections are potentially serious as they may cause acute illness and also serious illness in the future.
