Workplace Transport and Driving
Responsibilities and Monitoring
Not all sites are centrally managed and will
have their own systems by which on site transport is
managed. Every site should have a responsible,
named position, which is responsible for workplace
transport. Local arrangements should be
maintained which reflect the uniqueness of the sites and have in
place a schedule which ensures the maintenance on the physical
workplace and standards of operation. These
arrangements should be signed off by the senior manager responsible
for the site.
Monitoring
The manager in charge of the area should
appoint a person who works in the area to report on the
following:
- Are the vehicle and pedestrian segregation measures being followed?
- Are speed limits being followed by all drivers?
- Are those using fork-lift trucks and other specialist machines competent and trained?
- Are the lighting and signage measures sufficient and well maintained?
Accident and near misses should be investigated and reported on.
As a result of this monitoring you may have to
amend your risk assessment to reflect the changes you feel are
necessary to improve the safety arrangements of the site.
