Who is defined as a new or expectant mother?
New and expectant mothers an employee who is pregnant, who has given birth within the last six months , or who is breastfeeding.

Who is responsible for the assessment?
The line manager.

When should I carry out the risk assessment?
As soon as possible after the expectant mother notifies her line manager in writing about her pregnancy or handing in a doctor's confirmation note.

How is the risk assessment carried out?
A face to face discussion with the line manager and the pregnant woman to reduce or remove any  possible risk factors involved in the job activities for example manual handling, night work.

The pregnant woman is referred to Occupational Health provider for further advice and recommendations if there are any health impact.

Are there any records kept of the assessment and recommendations?

The line manager will keep a record of the assessment using them as part of the review process.

Who monitors the situation and reviews if necessary?
The line manager and if necessary involving the local Occupational Health adviser.

What if I receive a letter from a woman's doctor or midwife
indicating that they should not undertake night shift working.
In such circumstances the request should be honoured.

Refer to the occupational health provider for further assessment.
