Does the presenter/artist need to be a
qualified diver to dive?
Yes they must hold an appropriate PADI/BSAC or equivalent qualification which will certify them to dive to a certain depth dependent on the qualification. They do not have to be HSE registered if its only a one-off dive however the dive contractors dive project plan will need to take this into consideration eg, additional support required. They will also need to have a current HSE medical.

We are
planning to snorkel but no diving do we need to use a vetted
contractor?
No, but you will need to ensure person undertaking snorkelling is fit, can swim and has appropriate kit fins, mask and snorkel. Ideally they would have undertaken a BSAC snorkelling course or similar.

Can we use a dive contractor who is not
on the BBC approved list?
In circumstances where due to the geographical location and/or specialist knowledge is required, then a non-BBC approved contractor can be used. However, they must be competent, hold the appropriate qualifications and satisfy the BBC approval process before being utilised. Additionally if in the UK, they must be HSE registered. Please contact BBC Safety or BBC Procurement for further advice.

There is
not a defined dive contractor who takes on the
responsibility?
If there is a group of self-employed divers taking part in the project, they should jointly agree and nominate, in writing, one of the group to accept the role and responsibilities as diving contractor for the project. This person must be competent to perform the duties of the diving contractor.
