Manual Handling
Key Points

  • We have a legal duty to assess, control and minimise problems arising from manual handling.
  • Do not undertake manual handling tasks until the activity has been assessed and the control measures have been recorded and suitable action taken.
  • Use the Manual Handling Flowchart to guide you through the process for Manual Handling Risk Assessments, before tasks are undertaken.
  • Always assess the task and the individual. Take special account of Individuals who may be especially at risk, such as expectant and new mothers and those with pre-existing health problems.
  • The best way to reduce any risks found is to control the task, load, environment, individual activities and other factors.
  • Whenever possible consider whether you can avoid the lifting altogether or provide mechanical assistance such as a trolley.
  • If you experience or witness an incident or accident it must be reported to the BBC, or your employer if you are a contractor or service provider.
