We have a legal duty to assess, control and minimise problems arising from manual handling.
Do not undertake manual handling tasks until the activity has been assessed and the control measures have been recorded and suitable action taken.

Always assess the task and the individual. Take special account of Individuals who may be especially at risk, such as expectant and new mothers and those with pre-existing health problems.
The best way to reduce any risks found is to control the task, load, environment, individual activities and other factors.
Whenever possible consider whether you can avoid the lifting altogether or provide mechanical assistance such as a trolley.
If you experience or witness an incident or accident it must be reported to the BBC, or your employer if you are a contractor or service provider.
