Manual Handling
Key Points
- We have a legal duty to assess, control and
minimise problems arising from manual handling.
- Do not undertake manual handling tasks until the
activity has been assessed and the control measures have been
recorded and suitable action taken.
- Use the Manual Handling
Flowchart to guide you through the process for Manual Handling
Risk Assessments, before tasks are undertaken.
- Always assess the task and
the individual. Take special account of
Individuals who may be especially at risk, such as expectant and
new mothers and those with pre-existing health problems.
- The best way to reduce any risks found is to
control the task, load, environment, individual activities and
other factors.
- Whenever possible consider whether you can avoid
the lifting altogether or provide mechanical assistance such as a
trolley.
- If you experience or witness an incident or
accident it must be reported to the BBC, or your employer if you
are a contractor or service provider.
