Entrances, Exits & Corridors

All corridors, walkways, stairs, routes and doorways, etc, used for movement and circulation in and around a workplace (e.g. building, scaffold or site) must be;
  • Clean and clear of obstructions.
  • Adequately lit for normal and emergency use.
  • Provided with adequate direction signs for members of the public and staff.
  • Free from a risk of slip, tripping or falling.
  • Kept in good repair.
  • Vehicles and pedestrians should be kept separate wherever possible.
  • Where there are shared routes vehicle/pedestrian, these should be, clearly marked and laid out, obstructions should not force pedestrians in to the designated vehicle routes.
  • Where designated as an emergency exit, kept free of flammable material. 
Stairways and substantial slopes should be provided with secure handrails. Signs should be used to warn of residual risks.
