Key Points

  • Where ever you are, whatever you are doing, evaluate the risk.
  • Appropriate training and experience of team members is essential when operating in a cold environment.
  • Wear the correct clothes for cold weather.
  • If you have any concerns about the quality of drinking water, inform facilities management.
  • Corridors, walkways, stairs, doorways, around a workplace must be clean and clear of obstructions.
  • Managers must ensure suitable staff are identified and nominated to train as First Aiders as required.
  • Don't use mobile phones where they may interfere with other equipment,  e.g., hospitals, aeroplanes, petrol stations, quarries and where explosive gases may be present.
  • Rest areas should provide sufficient chairs, and if the facility is used for eating, tables should be provided.
  • Smoking is not permitted anywhere in BBC buildings with the exception of a small number of controlled designated smoking areas.
