Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Common Questions
How do I know if I need to use any personal
protective equipment?
Having done a risk assessment of an activity that will be undertaken, you can identify whether you need any PPE. If that activity presents a significant risk to health & safety and the risk cannot be reduced by any other means, suitable and effective PPE should be provided and used.

How do I know what equipment I need?
If you are unsure what equipment you need for the risk you may be exposed to, your Safety advisor, the High Risk Team where appropriate or the Safety Stores will be able to advise you.
Will I know how to use the safety equipment?
You should have had training to know how to use your PPE, either by formal training on a course or by explanation from the Safety Store or your local Health & Safety advisor.
Where can I get PPE from?
The Safety Store at TV Centre holds a wide range of PPE, including body armour (flak jackets) and helmets. There are also some stores of PPE held locally in the Nations & Regions and in overseas bureaux. Your local Health & Safety advisor or manager will know where this is held.

Once you have
selected a supplier from the vetted list, ask them if they will
supply a harness, and position the cameraman. If they will not,
contact you Safety Advisor. Safety Stores can supply a
harness. You must ensure that the cameraman knows how to use the
harness and position himself correctly.
Whoever supplies the harness should have
inspection records for it, that you should check. Safety Stores
inspect harnesses after each use.
