Confined Spaces
Key Points

Where work within a confined space is required by the production, you must:

1)  Appoint a competent person to plan and manage the work

2)  Not work alone in a confined space

3)  Use a permit to work system when working for or at the BBC

4)  Liaise with the competent person to determine:

  • Nature of confined space e.g. air quality, dimensions, etc
  • Date / time when safest to enter
  • Scope of activities which are safe to carry out
  • Equipment which is safe to use inside
  • Any specific entry requirements e.g. permits
  • Physical condition of those required to work inside
  • Potential for claustrophobia
  • Personal protective equipment required
  • Means of communication
  • Emergency arrangements e.g. means of rescue

5)  Prevent anyone entering the confined space unless authorised to do so by the competent person.
