Camera Operations
Steadicam

The Steadicam system is a special harness worn by the camera operator on to which a camera is fitted via special cantilever arms. This enables the camera to smoothly 'float' next to the operator whilst he/she is walking, running or even climbing stairs. It's an excellent alternative to a dolly when fluid movements are required or uneven surfaces are present.

Points to consider:
  • The whole Steadicam harness with camera attached can be very heavy and requires training and practice to operate effectively and safely.  It is extremely likely a lower back strain will result unless proper instruction is undertaken.
  • Steadicam operators usually come with their own kit set to their preferences, and with a docking station to rest the weight between takes. It's a very tiring activity requiring the operator to have a good level of physical fitness. Frequent breaks are necessary however tight the schedule may become!
  • A helper should always walk with the operator to ensure he/she doesn't trip over, bump into anything, or be hit by anything. A check of the route intended beforehand should be completed if at all possible.
  • The Steadicam operator should supplement the production risk assessment with one for their activity.
