Vehicles on Productions
Common Questions

What is the most important thing when booking or hiring a vehicle for production use?
That it is 'fit for purpose' i.e. designed for the use you wish to make of it. If you look in the vehicle type and operational procedures section,  you will see the responsible person(s) who can provide guidance and advice on the appropriate vehicle to use and its safe use. It also needs to be hired on the correct terms of trade.

What do I need to consider about the use of the vehicle?
You need to consider the safe use of the vehicle from the moment it leaves its base to go to its work location, its use at the location and its safe return to base. This will include travel routes; the location type and any hazards present; the rigging and de-rigging of the vehicle for its operational mode; the production use of the vehicle and any interaction it has with other vehicles and/or operations.

What are some of the key hazards that can be encountered in the use of vehicles on production?

These include:- electrical hazards (power supply); overhead obstacles (e.g. power lines; working at height (e.g. on vehicle roofs); trip hazards (cable rig); manual handling; fire (e.g. during re-fuelling); adverse weather & ground conditions; safe route to/from location; traffic; security issues; safe access/egress; hazardous substances.

Where can I get advice and guidance on the issue of vehicles used on production?
The Vehicle type and operational procedures section, which lists responsible persons for different types of vehicle.

What are 'Driver's Hours'?
UK legislation has set out the limits to how long a commercial driver can drive for.  There are also separate guidelines for driving in Europe.
