Driving and Vehicle Management
Common Questions
Does driver training for work, that
requires a specialist course ('C1' category, for
example, because it's capable of carrying 3.5 tonnes - i.e. a
large van). Come under health and safety training
requirements?
Yes, it would as it is a requirement for work.
Contact BBC Training to discuss your requirements and to find a
suitable BBC approved course (contact Fleet Management /
Procurement.)
If I carry
work either related equipment or colleagues in my privately owned
vehicle during my working day, must my insurance be for
business?
Absolutely. However, such a change can
frequently change normal social, domestic and pleasure (SD&P)
insurance premiums to prohibitively
expensive 'business' cover - failure to have cover
appropriate to usage is likely to void the policy. See the
BBC policy for further information.
Should I be
the subject of any prosecutions resulting from driving activities
for the BBC in my private vehicle, can I recover any related costs
to which I may be exposed - legal representation, fines or other
losses?
No. Additionally, you may be exposed to
resulting increased premiums - there is a requirement to declare
the results of such proceedings to the insurer and failure to do so
is likely to void the policy.
Yes, all drivers who drive for the BBC must
complete a DDF which can be found on the
Procurement site. The form is going to be
amended to include an option for "driving own vehicle" but for the
time being drivers completing a DDF solely with the intention of
using their own vehicle for BBC business should select the "Self
Drive Hire" vehicle category when completing the form.
Your insurance should clearly state that it is
for business use, you generally have to ask the insurer for it as
it is an option. In most cases it will put up
the cost of insurance.
Yes. Depending on the
circumstances, you may need to involve the police, your insurer may
require a police report. If you were on BBC
business, report via your line manager, and they will do the
initial investigation and report it to BBC
Safety. If you are off work because of it, it
may have to be officially reported to the HSE.
You will need a valid drivers licence to start
with. Once you have filled in the Drivers
Declaration Form, it will be evaluated and that will determine when
you will attend the Safe Driving Training. You do not have to of
had to attend the SDT to drive on BBC business.
If you have to use an unusual vehicle ie: quad bike, 4x4, your
manager should evaluate the risks and may decide to send you on a
course.
Yes. It is wise to do a visual check
every time you use your car, in case for example you have a
puncture. You are required to do a weekly check
and record your findings on a
BBC Weekly Vehicle Check Form and where
action is required either report it or take remedial action
yourself in the case of a driver owner.
