Driving and Vehicle Management

This information is directed at all those who drive, manage people who drive or manage vehicles, on or for the purpose of BBC business. It does not cover the specific requirements required by law for HGV driving. The responsibility for ensuring safe driving arrangements are followed lie with the Driver and Line Manager.

Driving on BBC business should be considered as one of many options. Alternative transport such as rail and air travel should be recognised as lower risk modes of transport. Alternatives to travel, such as telephone conversations or using local staffing resources should also be considered.

Health and safety law and hence these guidelines apply to all work travel with the exception of commuting, unless the employee is travelling from their home to a location which is not their usual place of work.

It is expected that fitness to drive should be considered following exceptionally long or exhausting days or periods of work.
