Environmental Nuisance
Common Questions

What are the suggested sound levels to avoid noise nuisance?
There are no specific noise levels for environmental noise.  Potential for noise nuisance depends on the nature of the noise and the sensitivity of the surrounding area. For example a large generator in the rural countryside would be less acceptable than a generator situated outside Television Centre on Wood Lane. A risk assessment should always be undertaken and appropriate controls implemented. BS4142:1997 sets out the methodology that should be used in determining whether or not a potential for noise nuisance may exist. BS5228-1:1997 sets out the basic noise controls applicable to construction and demolition activities.
