Working with Contractors
Independant Contractors
A contractor is a company or
individual employed to provide services to a BBC
production.
Certain high risk activities may only be
carried out by vetted contractors, so when
selecting please refer to the pre-vetted lists on
Gateway.
If a company is not listed then an application
can be made, but this takes time.
When selecting a contractor it will help you to
follow the Competent
Contractors Selection Quick Reference Guide.
If the contractor you wish to use has no
previous record with the BBC or you have no evidence of their
health & safety arrangements, then you will need to ask them to
complete the
pre-tender questionnaire.
The Producer must obtain from the contractor a written risk
assessment for the work and incorporate this into the Event risk
assessment. If the contractor's assessment is not ready on time,
they must also supply an interim statement of activities, hazard
and precautions, and the Event risk ssessment must be revised when
the full assessment is received.
The Producer must establish a contractor's
competence in safety for the specific production activity at the
selection stage of the contract process. Appropriate competence
criteria for the contractor must be determined before a contractor
is appointed. Look at Contractors in
Productions page.
Or look at the Quick Reference Guide (see
above).
Contractors are expected to have their own
adequate safety arrangements and any department placing a contract
must ensure that this is the case. They will also be expected to
follow any H&S rules applied to the site by the Event
Organiser.
Where work requires several contractors, one
contractor (the Principal Contractor) must be appointed to select
and control the sub- contractors. This Principal Contractor must
vet the health and safety arrangements and co-ordinate the
activities of all other contractors involved in the work, and use
the approved lists where appropriate.
Independent Contractors will appoint a person
from their team to actas the point of contact for health, safety
and security matters and will complete a risk assessment for their
activities. A copy should be given tothe Event Organiser / H&S
co-ordinator for incorporation in the Event Safety File.
