Weapons and Amourers
Vetting Criteria, Armourers

The use of firearms if controlled by others is a matter of exchanging managerial information of both our and their requirements, then applying the rules for Observation by BBC staff being safe by position and distance behind the line of fire.

For BBC controlled programmes involving the use of weapons we advise the use of an Armourer from the BBC vetted list of Armourers.

There can be exceptions for replica or deactivated guns but on every occasion this will involve completing a programme risk assessment specifying nominated person to deal with the weapon at all times, as well as agreement from BBC Safety.

An Armourer accepted on to the BBC vetted list of Armourers has been vetted to prove the following:
  • They have accepted the BBC's terms of trade and our arrangements for BBC approval, monitoring, withdrawing approval or reinstating on approved list
  • They have knowledge of the Firearms legislation and they can provide managerial arrangements with programme staff to ensure we operate the business of using weapons safely in all of the proposed programme situations
  • They will provide weapons in good condition and have all firearm certificates required, including appropriate test certificates, inspections and assessment records
  • They can provide a suitable and sufficient risk assessment as required by law
This risk assessment will include:
  • The safe use of the weapon for production work
  • Safe storage and safe transportation to and from location and temporary storage on location
  • Arrangements to deal with weapon being seen by public or used on location site
  • Procedures to avoid a gun being lost or stolen
  • Procedure or arrangements to deal with a gun being lost or stolen
  • Actions required if a gun misfires
  • Need for a dedicated named person responsible for the security of the gun in their absence
  • Exposure to noise levels as required to comply with Noise at Work Law.
