Working with Computers and Monitors
Workstation Requirements
Layout of Equipment (own
desk)
- The desk should be large enough to accomate all the equipment required and have enough space for the user to rest their arms comfortable on the desk. There should be enough room for paperwork.
- A screen raiser may be required so that the monitor can be placed at the correct height.
- A document holder may be required if the user is having to copy or refer to written text while entering details on the computer.
- The desk should have enough space underneath so the user can get their legs freely under the desk. There should be no obstructions like the CD drive in the way.
- The screen should be placed in front of the user (not off to one side in a corner) to avoid twisted positions.
- The CD drive should be placed on the floor out of the way of the legs. Not on the desk and not as a monitor raiser.
- The desk should be placed so that a window is not directly behind or in front on the desk. The best position if there are windows is to the side. This avoids glare on the screen or bright light in front of the users.
- A foot rest may be required.
- Blinds are required on windows so that bright sunlight can be reduced if required by the users.
- The chair needs to be adjustable so that it can be made comfortable for the users. Chairs ordered at the BBC should cover these requirements. Chairs come in different sizes; a chair that might be comfortable for a small person may be very uncomftable for a tall person. One chair may not fit all.
- A phone headset is required if users have to enter details on their computer at the same time as being on the phone. Cradling the phone between the neck and shoulder is not acceptable.
