Nurseries
There are various nurseries in the BBC some run
by staff associations (e.g. Bristol) and some run on behalf of BBC
People Woodlands and Elstree. For open days and events it should be
made clear that children should be accompanied. Otherwise the
public may take the nickname Auntie the wrong way.
Any nursery or crèche must be licensed
by the local authority. The license requirements will cover:
- The written policy needed
- The number of qualified staff, given the ages and numbers of children attending
- The standards covering discipline, medication, the ill-health of children, and the security of children
- Maintaining hygiene standards, particularly in regard to toiletting (and nappies), food, and toys
- Ensuring that under-threes do not obtain inhalable objects
- Ensuring that any toy introduced into the crèche is safe
- Measures to prevent any child coming into contact with a hazardous substance, sharp object, or excessively hot surface/substance
- The standards for outdoor play area e.g. free of trapping hazards, have suitable soft landings, and have stable equipment free of splinters (wood, metal or paint) and appropriate for the children who will use it
- The insurances that are required.
