Fire Safety in Studios and on Location
Studios

Purpose built studios and studios which remain in use for more than six weeks must be subject to fire risk assessment carried out by a competent person.  The outcomes of which should be actioned and recorded.

Fire lanes must be provided around the perimeter of each studio with a minimal clear width of at least 1200mm from scenery or cyclorama (wider if large studios with audiences in excess of 300 persons).  Lanes should lead to the safe escape routes the number and disposition of which should be approved by a competent person.

Openings in cyclorama and sets should be made for fire escape routes.  There should normally be two or more openings of sufficient width to accommodate the number of persons resorting to the studio within the cyclorama.

For audiences there should be an area of at least three metres between the audience rostrum and any scenery to allow cameras to move forward in the event of an evacuation.  Audience rostra layout and construction should be approved by a competent person.

Fire alarms and automatic fire detection systems should be provided on a risk based approach and where necessary may include approved phasings in order to protect broadcast and visual indications in approved locations to limit disruption and to allow for a managed evacuation.  This is particularly necessary where members of the public are present.

An appropriate system of emergency lighting should be provided to allow for evacuation should normal power supply fail.

Fire signage should be provided as appropriate to clearly indicate the escape routes from sets.  Studio escape routes should normally be indicated by illuminated signs.  Appropriate fire fighting equipment should be provided and located in prominent positions and suitably signed.  The provision and siting should be approved by a competent person.

Staff training should be provided to cover the risks associated with fire safety in studios and sufficient fire warden arrangements need to be in place in order to evacuate the studio safety in the event of fire.
