Restrictions to Working Hours

There are restrictions on the numbers of hours and the days that children and young people are allowed to work. The hours that children and young people are allowed to work vary according to their age and whether they are attending school. There are restrictions when it comes to work before 0700 or after 1900 and if working on a Sunday.

Working time includes training - whether theoretical or practical. If they work for more than one "employer", your calculations must include the time they work elsewhere.  It is also worth noting the day starts when they get up in the morning, and they may have to travel some distance to get to the studio or location. Travelling time is not generally considered as part of the working day but may have repercussions on the child's performance.

The total number of working days that a child is permitted to work within any year is subject to the education authority's discretion. A table summarising the working hours allowed within those days is on the Rights Groups website. BBC Rights group will provide advice on the permissions needed.
