Flammable liquids and gases
Gas cylinders should be stored externally and chained upright. Acetylene and LPG cylinders should be stored separately from oxygen cylinders.
  • No LPG cylinders should be permitted below ground level.
  • Flammable liquids should be limited in quantity and be stored in suitably designed metal cabinets.
  • Large quantities should be kept in purpose built, non-combustible stores.
Smoking
Smoking should be prohibited or limited to designated areas provided with suitable ashtrays.
 
Housekeeping and Storage
  • Rubbish should be removed on a daily basis.
  • Skips should be sited at least 3m from the building.
  • Burning of rubbish on site should be prohibited.
  • Bulk quantities of combustible building materials should be kept in suitable stores.
Temporary partitions and coverings
  • Temporary partitions should be made of materials of limited combustibility (e.g. plasterboard) or materials that cannot be readily ignited. Protective coverings should at least be fire retardant.
  • No external storage of combustible materials should be permitted adjacent to the building a clear space of at least 6m should be maintained.
Plant and machinery
  • Machinery with internal combustion engines should only be used in well ventilated locations. Exhausts should be clear of combustible materials.
Temporary accommodation
  • Portable buildings should not be sited less than 10m from buildings under construction. Spaces beneath such buildings should be sealed to prevent the build up of combustible waste.
  • Where it is necessary to locate portable buildings internally, such buildings should be fire resisting. They should not be used as stores for paints and other combustible items.
  • All internal temporary accommodation should be fitted with automatic fire detection, which should be monitored by an alarm receiving centre and/or site security (if 24 hour).
Means of escape
  • Means of escape should not be obstructed or compromised by the contract works.
Access and facilities for the fire brigade
  • Access for fire appliances should be kept available at all times.
  • Hydrants, rising main inlets and outlets should not be obstructed.
