Fire Safety During Contractor's Operations
General Precautions

Supervision
  • A named individual should be responsible for fire precautions during the works. This person should normally be present on site.
  • The site should be thoroughly inspected at the end of each working day.
Security against arson
  • The site should be secured against unauthorised access.
Fire and emergency procedures
  • All persons working on site should be informed of the fire procedures.
  • Fire procedure notices should be displayed at 'fire points' and other locations as necessary.
Fire extinguishing appliances
  • Sufficient fire extinguishers and/or hose reels should be provided.
  • They should be grouped into 'fire points' strategically located throughout the area of the works and be clearly indicated (e.g. by signs).
  • Fire extinguishing appliances should be inspected regularly and maintained.
Fire detection and suppression systems
  • Where feasible, fire detection and extinguishing systems being installed as part of the works should be made operational as soon as possible to provide protection during the course of the works.
  • Care should be taken to avoid false alarms from dust, etc.
Electrical installations
  • Temporary electrical installations should comply with the requirements of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) and should be inspected and tested at least every three months, or when the installation is modified.
  • Proper methods of cable support should be provided. Damaged cables, improper joints and poor practice such as looping over nails, etc. should not be permitted.
Heating and lighting
  • Temporary heating appliances should be in good condition and securely fixed and guarded.
  • Radiant bar electric fires should not be permitted, and the use of LPG fuelled transportable fan assisted heaters should be avoided.
  • A clear space should be maintained between any heating and lighting equipment and combustible materials.

Hot work

  • Hot work permits should be issued for all cutting, welding and other hot work.
