The offices and production areas of the BBC
contain many items of portable and expensive equipment such as
desktop computers, printers, laptops, PDAs, AV equipment, DAT
recorders, minidisk recorders, DV camcorders, studio technical
equipment and properties. These may be taken for use at production
locations. Care needs to be taken to prevent losses. In the case of
the theft of any PC, all staff should be aware of the potential
damage that could be caused by the compromise of information held
within the hard drive.
The consequential costs of replacement for
equipment lost or stolen, loss of data, and disruption are often
greater than the unit cost and represent a significant drain on the
creative and work process and budgets. All BBC owned property will
be permanently marked with an approved BBC standard mark clearly
identifying it as a BBC owned item.
The prevention of theft is a combination of
deterrents to frustrate the thief by making the crime not
worthwhile. This is especially so if the value of items
stolen can be reduced so that they cannot easily be sold on, or
carry the fear of discovery.
The simplest solutions taken together
are:
- to lock small items in secure storage;
- fix large items by the use of locking ties/mounts/brackets;
- to visibly mark "BBC" on the item in a prominent place in such a way that it cannot be removed without irreparably damaging the goods.
(If hired or leased the deterrent marking may
be the name of the supplier.)
Where an employee is permitted to take portable
equipment out of BBC premises he/she should be issued with an
Equipment Removal Permit Form issued by the Facilities Manager
and completed by the departmental manager.
This authority permits the item to be passed
through security searches and checks, provided the authority
matches the identity of the person removing it.
