Trade Effluent Consents
A trade effluent consent is needed for the disposal of contaminated water into the sewage network from commercial premises for substances other than domestic sewage. It is your responsibility to obtain Consent prior to making a discharge to the public sewer network. Discharging to the public sewer network without Consent is a criminal offence.

Trade effluent can include:
  • waste chemicals, including oils,
  • liquid process wastes
  • detergents
  • condensate water from compressed air installations
  • cooling water
  • biodegradable liquids
  • wash water
  • liquid wastes or wash waters, other than domestic sewage, discharged using sinks, basins or toilets, and
  • contaminated mine or quarry water.

To apply for a Trade Effluent consent you need to contact the local sewage undertaker. For example this would be Thames Water (Process Quality Waste group) in the London region and their Customer Services number is 0845 9200 888.
