Waste Carriers
Waste Carriers must be registered with the Environment Agency (England and Wales), Scottish Environment Protection Agency or the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland (with certain exceptions). Look at the carrier's certificate of registration ensuring correct names, addresses and dates or check with the Agencies.

This can be done either by:
  • Using the Public Registers on the Environment Agencies websites
  • Telephoning the Environment Agency direct on 08708 506 506 and requesting a list of registered waste carriers in the area or by quoting the company's name which you would like to use.
NOTE: The BBC can transport its own waste without the need to register as a waste carrier, with the exception of construction and demolition waste. Construction and demolition waste can only be moved by a registered waste carrier. The BBC is not a waste carrier and does not have the relevant systems in place to register therefore under no circumstances should any construction or demolition waste or any waste produced by someone else (i.e. a specialist sub-contractor) be transported in a BBC vehicle.

In some cases, another person (agent or broker) may arrange for the collection and disposal on behalf of the BBC.  If this is the case, this person must be registered with the Environment Agency as a Waste Broker.  Again, ask to see evidence that a broker is properly authorised and you can also contact the Environment Agency (England and Wales), Scottish Environment Protection Agency or the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland to check this.
