Hazardous Waste Premises Notification
Any site/outside broadcast/production location/live events producing Hazardous Waste in England and Wales have a legal duty to register as a Hazardous Waste Producer with the Environment Agency. When hazardous waste is produced at, or removed from a premises, that premises must be registered with the Environment Agency, unless the premises is an office producing less than 200 kgs in any one year. The registration will usually be undertaken by the waste carrier however the premises must be registered in the BBC's name. Each premise registered will be given a unique registration number or 'premises code' which must be given to the waste carrier taking the waste.

Registration can be completed by doing the following:
  • Register on-line
  • Download the paper application form which costs £28
  • Telephone the Environment Agency (England and Wales) 08708 502 858
In Scotland and Northern Ireland hazardous waste is known as special waste and local controls apply. Further information can be obtained from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland.
When hazardous waste is consigned for transport, the producer and the carrier must complete a consignment note which fully describes the waste.  Copies of this note must be retained on file for at least 3 years by the producer of the waste so an audit trail can be identified when requested.
