Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITIES)

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITIES) is an international treaty which regulates international trade in species currently threatened with extinction, or species which might become threatened. The point of such trade restrictions is to decrease the demand for specimens from endangered species. A trade ban, however, does nothing to encourage nations to promote the survival of species, which are frequently endangered because of human encroachment on their habitat.
