Oil and Chemical Storage
Chemical Storage (Including Paint)

The minimum requirements for chemical storage:
  • All chemicals must be stored in an area where spillages will be contained; this must either be within a secure area of the building which would contain a spillage or within an impermeable bund, which must contain at least 110% of the volume of the largest tank or 25% of the total volume being stored, whichever is the greatest.
  • Any chemicals stored on site must meet the BBC's requirements in relation to Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH).
  • Accumulated rainwater within bunded areas must be removed regularly and if contaminated it must be dealt with as Hazardous Waste.
  • The installation should be protected from vandalism e.g. chemicals must be stored within a secure area.
  • All deliveries of chemicals must be supervised by a competent member of staff to ensure containers are not overfilled and that the chemicals are delivered to the correct areas.
  • Emergency plans are required to cover chemical storage, and this is must include the provision of spill kits and drain covers.
