Oil Storage for Temporary Generators

The minimum requirements for below ground oil storage for temporary generators / location filming are:
  • Oil storage installations must be sited on a hard impermeable surface resistant to the product stored. If a hard surface is not available it is practicable to site generators on the track way if present.
  • Secondary containment must be used to prevent spillages. Examples include double skin tanks, bund walls (a wall or secondary containment facility surrounding an oil or chemical storage facility) or drip trays which must contain at least 110% of the volume of the largest tank or 25% of the total volume being stored, whichever is the greatest.
  • Accumulated rainwater within bunded areas must be removed regularly and if contaminated it must be dealt with as Hazardous Waste.
  • The installation should be protected from vandalism e.g. oil should be stored within a secure area.
  • The generator owner must ensure that the oil is delivered to the right tank, tanks are not overfilled and that a record of the volume of oil delivered is retained on site.
  • The generator owner should inspect the facility during re-fuelling to check for potential leaks, condition of bunds, tanks etc and a record including any remedial actions should be retained on site.
  • A spillage response plan must be developed by an identified responsible person in conjunction with the owner and this must be held on site along with spill kits and drain covers (if required).
