Oil and Chemical Storage
Above ground Oil Storage (Including Cooking Oils)
The minimum requirements for above ground oil
storage at BBC premises are:
- Oil storage installations must be sited on a hard impermeable surface resistant to the product stored.
- Steel Oil storage tanks must meet British Standard external requirements and further guidance must be sought from BBC Safety before procuring any new oil storage facilities.
- Secondary containment must be used to prevent spillages. Examples include double skin tanks, bund walls or drip trays which must contain at least 110% of the volume of the largest tank or 25% of the total volume being stored, whichever is the greatest.
- Accumulated rainwater within bunded areas must be removed regularly and if contaminated with oil it must be dealt with as Hazardous Waste.
- The installation should be protected from vandalism e.g. oil should be stored within a secure area.
- All deliveries of oil must be supervised by an identified responsible person to ensure that the oil is delivered to the right tank, tanks are not overfilled and that a record of the volume of oil delivered is retained on site.
- An identified responsible person must undertake a check on the amount of oil purchased against the amount used after every delivery in order to identify potential losses and ensure a record of this is retained on site (any discrepancy must be logged as an environmental incident using MyRisks - Tools and investigated by management as appropriate).
- An identified responsible person should inspect the facility at least once a week to check the condition of bunds, tanks and pipe work for damage and a record including any remedial actions should be retained on site.
- Emergency response plans must be held on site and are required to cover oil storage, and this includes the provision of spill kits and drain covers.
