Manual Handling

The purpose of this document is to provide the primary reference materials for the procedures and guidance associated with the management of Manual Handling in BBC premises and at locations. It explains how to assess the risks and provides some guidance and best practice for dealing with them.  It is for all staff, but in particular those undertaking, managing and assessing manual handling activities. Manual Handling is:
  • The transporting or supporting of loads by human effort. It includes any lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or supporting a load.
  • A major cause of injury in the UK workplace and is a prime causal factor of serious incidents within the BBC.
 
Injuries arising from Manual Handling accidents can be painful and sometimes debilitating, they are often expensive and disruptive for you, your programme and the BBC.  Avoiding injuries from Manual Handling is in everyone's interest and makes sound business sense.
