Health Surveillance
Health surveillance provides information
which helps to protect employees from illness caused by being
exposed to certain health risks at work. It enables risks to be
effectively managed by acting as a check on how control measures
are working, and helps to pinpoint where further interventions are
needed.
It is only undertaken when:
- There is an identifiable disease or adverse health effect related to the exposure
- There is a reasonable likelihood that the effect will occur under the particular conditions of the work
- There are valid techniques for detecting indications of the disease, or effect.
- Early intervention will be beneficial to the health of the employee
Health surveillance must not be used as a
substitute for suitable measures to control the health
risk.
