Flying

The BBC does not operate aircraft.  It does, however, charter a large number and wide variety of aircraft both within the U.K. and abroad in order to fulfil its aerial filming function.  Approximately 2000 hours aerial filming is undertaken each year by BBC personnel. The types of aircraft include Aeroplanes, Helicopters, Hot Air Balloons, Microlights and Model Aircraft.  Aerial filming is a specialist activity and all flying activity is highly regulated and strictly enforced by relevant Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The BBC has in place specific requirements and guidance that producers must follow when undertaking any form of aerial filming.  These guidelines are designed to minimise the risk associated with the aerial filming activity, ensure compliance with the law and help get the best aerial footage possible.
