Noise and Sound

Deafness caused by exposure to noise at work is permanent and incurable.

Exposure to noise can also cause other forms of hearing damage eg tinnitus, which is a sensation such as 'ringing' or 'buzzing' in the ear, which can also occur in combination with hearing loss.

These conditions are totally preventable if Employers recognise that high sound levels are hazardous:
  1. Take action to reduce exposure to noise and provide personal hearing protection and health surveillance to employees.
  2. Employees make use of the personal hearing protection or other control measures supplied.
Exposure to excessive levels of noise and sound must be assessed and controlled. Exposure can occur from various sources including the surrounding environment, headphones and earpieces.

Line managers are primarily responsible for ensuring that staff are not exposed to dangerous noise and sound levels and that, as appropriate, the rules and guidance specified in this topic are complied with.
