Asbestos
Primarily aimed at premises managed through BBC
Workplace and occupied by BBC staff, the following also caters for
the eventuality of contact with such hazards in other BBC
activities, such as Programme Production.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fibre
that may have been used in buildings and building material up until
the late 1999's when the last asbestos prohibition notice came into
force.
Buildings of any age up to this date may
contain asbestos as a result from the original building materials
or subsequent alterations. Asbestos may be present for example in
roofing materials, sprayed coatings as fire protection, boiler and
pipe lagging, floor tiles, wall partitions, electrical components,
and any material which may have been expected to be heat resistant,
these are commonly known as Asbestos Containing
Materials or ACM's.
The hazards to health following exposure to
airborne concentrations of asbestos fibres are widely known.
