Make-Up, Hairdressing and Costume

The use of Make Up, Hairdressing and costume within the TV industry brings with it certain risks to the Make Up artists, hairstylists, costume department staff, and also to the onscreen actors and contributors. The risks are:
  • The possibility of allergic reactions to the substances or materials being used.
  • The risk of disease being spread by poor working practices.
  • Injuries from equipment/machinery being used eg scissors, razors, irons, sewing machines etc.
  • Electric shock from faulty equipment.
  • Fire and explosion where flammable substances or materials are being used.
  • Slips,trips, falls from trailing cables, poorly set up make-up buses, honeywagons, unsuitable costume shoes being worn for the conditions etc.
The control measures needed to eliminate or reduce the above risks are outlined in this guidance, and should be read and understood by make up, hairdressing and costume staff and those who employ them.
